We don’t care if it was recorded in 1989, or yesterday with your home recording setup. There are no limitations, and often times we work within the limitations of budget and the technical limitations of the equipment used to record. You’d be surprised with the quality of some home recordings with an expert ear adjusting the mix. Cassette tape recorders or tape machines, as well as digital recording devices can all make great recordings from home. Different room tones may affect the tone of the recording, so get those mics close and double check that the levels are reasonable (for digital recordings be especially careful about going in to the red) Analog recordings can take more level sometimes, but be careful. Often times bass frequencies can handle more tape saturation, so don’t be afraid to drive the kick and bass to tape with a nice hot level. That’s how you get that nice compression and saturation of mellow bass tones. Some tape saturation on snare and drum mics can have a nice effect too, but too much cymbal level to tape will result in a deep fried sound. Let’s talk about your next project regardless of what it is.
