What Is Kwanzaa?

Kawanzaa is an African-American celebration invented by Dr Maulana Krenga. He first started it in 1966 as a harvest ritual, and as a way to combat the commercialization of Christmas. Kawanzaa has 7 core principles, (Nguza Saba) which include Unity or Umoja , Self Determination  or Kujichagulia , Collective work and Responsibility  or Ujima , Cooperative Economics  or Ujamaa, Purpose or Nia , Creativity or Kuumba, and Faith  or Imani.

When did Kwanzaa start?

1966. Radical Professor Ron Karenga aka Dr Manana Karenga, black panther and social justice warrior devised a modernization of the matunda ya kwanza of the Swahili, or “first fruit celebration” which Kwanza has ties to feminism and black nationalism.
